Of all the shiny objects that I saw WTF Espresso Bar, a tricked-out cafe that opened last month in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, the gadget that caught my attention was a conical filter made of perforated stainless steel [ top]. He was sitting in a Chemex brewer, which looked much more impressive when equipped with a metal filter that could draw blood. It was a Kone, a reusable filter developed by Keith Gehrke COAV of a coffee roaster in small quantities in Portland, Oregon
The Kone is a beautiful, simple and austere. More to the point of conception, the fact that coffee is rich and full. The filter is cleaner than a mesh basket, and photochemical machined holes that let the oil would be absorbed by a flow of paper through the standard filter. It gives you control a Chemex and tannic cut you get from the French press: a Frenchmex.
Whether you like it is a matter of taste. For most of my adult life, I was a French-partisan press. But in recent years I have been experimenting with different methods of filtering, and now I'm used to drink coffee with bright floral aromas. When I started using the Kone last week, it is strange to find such an aggressive coffee sitting in my Chemex. It was like pulling up a bamboo steamer and meet a piece of grilled meat.
The Kone has been introduced this month, and there are already 900 orders. SAN FRANCISCO – Apple Inc. announced a smaller, cheaper version of its Apple TV device for streaming movies and television shows over the Internet and into the living room. It also unveiled a new line of iPods, including a touch-screen Nano model.

The tiny new Apple TV system announced Wednesday will only let people rent, not buy, content. For first-run high-definition movies the day they come out on DVD, people will have to pay $4.99. High-definition TV show rentals will be 99 cents.

The price of the box is also being cut to $99, from $229. Cheaper options for streaming video had been available, including Roku's set-top boxes that start at $60.

Apple TV has been around since 2007, but it hasn't caught on with the mainstream. For one thing, it doesn't record shows the way TiVo and other digital video recorders do. And the need to sync the box with a computer was too complicated for most consumers, Apple CEO Steve Jobs said.

"We've sold a lot of them, but it's never been a huge hit," Jobs said.

The new Apple TV, which will be available within a month, will give people access to the high-definition version of top movies, though Jobs didn't say which movie studios have agreed to include their titles for streaming. Television episodes also be available, including such hits as "The Simpsons" and "Glee."

People who watch content from Netflix Inc. streamed over the Internet can also access their "instant" queue through Apple TV.

Apple is offering rentals from News Corp.'s Fox, The Walt Disney Co.'s ABC, ABC Family and Disney Channel and BBC America. Jobs said he hoped other television companies would join once the service gains popularity.

Some media companies have raised concerns that the 99-cent television rentals would undercut higher-priced offerings for permanent download, which sell for $1.99 and $2.99.

Earlier, Jobs unveiled a buttonless touch-screen iPod Nano that people control with swipes across the screen instead of with buttons. It will cost $149 for the 8 gigabyte version and $179 for 16 gigabytes. Like previous versions, the Nano has a built-in FM tuner and can display photos.

Apple also updated the iPod Touch, adding video-chat features similar to the newest iPhone. It has a front-facing camera for conducting video calls with other iPod Touch and iPhone users over Wi-Fi using Apple's FaceTime program. A camera on the back can be used for taking snapshots and recording video. Prices range from $229 to $399.

Jobs hosted the event for hundreds of journalists, bloggers and analysts Wednesday in a black crew neck top rather than his trademark mock turtleneck.

There, Jobs also showed off a new iPod Shuffle, the smallest, least expensive music player in Apple's line. Like the most recent Shuffle, the new one can speak the names of playlists and songs. But Apple backtracked from its last design, which did away with physical buttons on the music player. The new $49 device brings back the square shape and buttons of Apple's second-generation Shuffle.

Apple gave its iTunes software a minor makeover, too, and added some social features to help people discover new music and tap into what friends are listening to. The feature, called Ping, is likely based on the technology Apple acquired with the purchase of Lala.com last year.

The Ping section in iTunes 10 lets people "follow" friends, musicians and others, and see such details as what music they're buying and what concerts they're attending. The information will come in a long stream of updates, similar to the way Facebook and Twitter work.

Apple announced additional updates to the software that runs iPhones, the iPod Touch and the iPad. Next week, iPhone and iPod Touch users can download a free new version, iOS 4.1, that offers the ability to upload high-definition video over Wi-Fi. And when people take photos, the new software will save three slightly different copies that, when combined, make for a sharper image.

The iPad currently runs an older version of iOS than the iPhone 4 and the iPod Touch. It doesn't allow for much multitasking — running more than one program at a time — and it doesn't have folders for programs.

Jobs said an update coming in November will bring the iPad's capabilities in line with those of smaller gadgets. It will also add such features as wireless printing to Apple's tablet computer. Apple had been criticized for making a powerful device but hobbling it by not including any ports for USB devices such as printers or thumb drives.

WEAPONRY
Le built a replica of the machine gun on the suit’s shoulder out of PVC pipes and other materials. He added a small motor and belt drive to make the cylindrical gun spin like the real thing. To activate it, he presses a button in the palm of the suit’s glove. He says the gun could also be converted into a paintball shooter.

POWER
Le built an LED-based replica of Iron Man alter ego Tony Stark’s arc reactor for the chest, but unlike the movie version, it doesn’t actually power the suit. Instead, all the LEDs and the motors that drive the gun and the faceplate have their own batteries hidden within the suit’s large frame.

CONTROLS
Inside the chestplate, Le added a hands-free button that activates the helmet. When the faceplate is open, he just stands up and points his arm forward, causing his chest to press against the button, triggering the servo motors in the helmet to close the mask. This, in turn, switches on the red LEDs set inside the eye openings, which are large enough for him to also see out of. To open the mask up again, he presses another button.

BACKUP
Le says he focused on the War Machine suit, donned by Stark’s buddy Jim Rhodes in Iron Man 2, in part because “it just looks more hardcore.” But he also built a new-and-improved replica of the suit that Iron Man himself wears in the film, the Mark VI. That version also has the LEDs and motorized faceplate but, alas, no cannon.
